All Japan - Stroke and criminal investigation

On the May 29, 2011 All Japan Pro Wrestling show, Nobukazu Hirai suffered a stroke following his match. He was immediately rushed to a hospital where they performed heart surgery.

In the days following, Yahoo Japan Sports Navi reported that prior to the show Hirai was legitimately attacked backstage and left bloodied. It was believed that those responsible were two or three members of the Voodoo Murderers unit. Eye witness accounts have stated that gaijin members Joe Doering and Rene Dupree were expelled from the dressing room before the beating apparently began, so they were likely not involved. While there is no proof, it was believed unit members KONO and MAZADA were still in the room.

TARU, the leader and founder of the group since making the jump to All Japan from Dragon Gate at the start of 2005 after being one of the key figures dating back to the birth of Toryumon as a promotion, took full responsibility and was placed on indefinite suspension. He was heard to have said "I'll beat--" coming out of his mouth prior to the beating, thereby placing suspicion on him that he may have instigated the attack. In a press conference, TARU explained that he was note entirely sure which members of the VM were involved due to the "excitement" of the situation, but he nevertheless accepted the blame. He also noted that he recently paid Hirai a visit at the hospital to make amends.

Hirai is responsive and is expected to be moved from ICU to the general ward, if he hasn't already.

A member of the All Japan office named Uchida stressed the belief that the attack and the stroke may not be related since wrestlers receive head trauma regularly. However, police have decided to conduct a criminal investigation into the beating.

In an interesting development, the official web page for All Japan went down yesterday. It was initially noted that it was for maintenance. They later switched it to saying that the system was down.

UPDATE

The word coming out is that the attack was a result of TARU believing that Hirai, as a senior since he's been in the business since 1991, was being disrespectful and unfitting of his role as a senior by dogging it in matches and getting drunk all of the time. TARU had had enough of Hirai's behavior and decided to beat his point across.

As mentioned above, Joe Doering and Rene Dupree were dismissed from the locker room prior to the attack. Minoru, MAZADA and KONO were in the room, but they did not participate. However, they did nothing to stop it either, seeing it as a case of "it's their issue, we're not stepping in." It took Kohei Wada, of all people, to finally put a stop to the beating.

As a result of not stepping in and stopping the fight, All Japan suspended Minoru, MAZADA and KONO. With KONO's suspension, he and Doering were stripped of the AJPW Unified World Tag Team Championship. And, as expected, the Voodoo Murders unit has been officially dissolved.
