2011: What Have I Missed?

PostPosted by #Foxxc# » Mon Aug 29, 2011 9:59 am

Well, as you all know I'm the MMA guy and due to my "inside" sources I now get a billion MMA events featuring eleventy billion guys you've never heard of from Brazil, Japan, Russia and so forth to watch so I have watched very little pro wrestling outside of the Fed this year.

I have recently found my love for Puro after IVPvideos started uploading their DVD's to download for $1.50 so I snatched some Tiger Mask, Dynamite Kid, Dean Malenko, Davey Richards and Michinoku Pro stuff which I'm having a blast with but what have I missed this year?

I have watched ROH's iPPV's, CHIKARA king of trios and PWG's All Star Weekend but outside of that I've missed a lot this year.

What matches/events are worth me wasting my time on from the independents, Japan, Madagascar or wherever.

I'm fairly ignorant of indies outside USA. Frankly, I'm not the most knowledgeable guy on those either, but I try to follow them a little bit. So, this thread could turn out to be a real eye opener if there is anyone poking around who has anything they can contribute on this.

I can massively recommend PWG and Chikara from this year. Chikara has the 12 Large Summit tournament going on to crown their first ever singles champion (that isn't for just under 25s) and is generally the most entertaining fed about. I'd say it's more of a league than a tournament. The premise being that every match in the tournament gets a good amount of time to create a meaningful match. Each has it's own style and substance. Without wishing to give anything away, there have been some real classics. I can highly recommend both the Chikarasauras (sp?) Rex shows but if you're going to go for just one, make it night 2:

1. Makoto vs. Tsukasa Fujimoto
2. Dasher Hatfield vs. Archibald Peck
3. Mima Shimoda vs. Daizee Haze
4. UltraMantis Black, Hallowicked & Frightmare vs. Team 3.Ole' (El Generico & 3.0)
5. Chuck Taylor & Johnny Gargano vs. Atlantis & Rey Bucanero
6. Eddie Kingston vs. Jigsaw
7. Johnny Saint & Mike Quackenbush vs. Johnny Kidd & Colt Cabana
8. Sara Del Rey vs. Claudio Castagnoli

PWG just has the most action packed cards out there. No one card really stands out but for pure hilarity, the wrestlereunion show is a good watch. I'd personally go for something at their home venue though. That place is rather special for PWG. They've been brining in and making quite a few young guys recently while maintaining people like Hero, Low Ki, Generico, Steen, Young Bucks in very, very good matches. I'd check out Card Subject To Change II:

Singles Match
1. "Pretty" Peter Avalon vs. Johnny Yuma

Singles Match
2. Candice LeRae vs. Portia Perez

Singles Match
3. Willie Mack vs. Roderick Strong

Singles Match
4. Low Ki vs. Akira Tozawa

Singles Match
5. Johnny Goodtime vs. Ryan Taylor

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Championship Title Match
6. Claudio Castagnoli - Champion vs. "Hollywood Submission Machine" Joey Ryan - Challenger

Pro Wrestling Guerrilla World Tag Team Championship Title Match
7. ¡Peligro Abejas! (El Generico & Ricochet - Champions) vs. The Young Bucks (Matt & Nick Jackson - Challengers)

Greatly appreciated Rich, I'll pick up those events.

Anyone got anything from the land of the rising sun? I picked up the NOAH-AJPW-NJPW joint show from Budokan Hall from the other day.
